Part of the definition & beauty of backroads skiing is being out remote mountain areas. Knowing help might be quite a distance &/or time away, it is important to ski safely. Here are a few safety considerations:
- look at maps before you go & have a map with you
- talk with local skiers &/or go with one to get familiar with the area
- know the snow, trail, road, weather conditions and forecast for the day & area
- tell someone where you are going & when you are planning to return
- dress in more layers than you need, you can always take things off
- take a safety kit: matches, firestarter, compass, whistle, headlamp, knife
- take more food & water than you think you'll need
- know your limits in terms of distance, elevation climb, weather & snow conditions
- ski in control, especially on icy downhill sections
- be aware of changing weather conditions
- plan to be done prior to dark, which comes early in the mountains during winter
